Why the Revelation of the Mystery?

Background

“Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith.”

Romans 16:25-26

Over time, Christianity has joined the ranks of world religions. This is because a very great part of the vital message that was conferred distinctively to Paul’s apostleship in the first century has remained lost to humanity. This loss has caused doctrines and practices which are contrary to it to become the norm accepted. As a result of this, the realities of the sacred secret are not known to many. 

The Lord Jesus Christ used the Apostle Paul to present the unique discourse called the revelation of the mystery. Paul describes the gospel entrusted to him with the personal possessive pronoun, “my.” By implication, he claims ownership of the message he preaches to distinguish it from what was preached by others. The gospel is the Gospel of Christ; it belongs to Him, and it is the revelation of His Person and His work. However, it was also known as the Gospel of Paul because it was committed to the Apostle Paul, and what was revealed to him is found nowhere else in any other New Testament epistle. As ministers of the Gospel, we need to learn from Paul how to boldly claim what has been given to us.

The apostle Paul uses an interesting Greek word to describe this sacred secret that the Lord Jesus Christ revealed to him. He uses the term “musterion,” which is the Greek word for mystery. Whenever Paul refers to the term “musterion,” which he does twenty-one times in his epistles, he explicitly talks about the one supreme mystery of Christ revealed, and the multiple aspects attached to it. The Lord Jesus Christ disclosed to Paul what the Godhead had planned before the world began. Also, within this disclosure was an explanation of all that had occurred from the cross to the throne. The system of truth of how the household of God is to be administered and how its affairs are to be governed were all codified within Paul’s epistles. This is the dispensation that was given to him.

The Father has bestowed within this Gospel the power for believers to be established. The greatest problem experienced by Christians in the Church of Jesus Christ today is instability. They are “tossed too and fro by every wind of doctrine.” The term “wind,” used by Paul in this phrase, is translated from the Greek word “pneuma.” It refers to a vital principle that animates the mind, by implication, an idea. When someone is not stable in the revelation of the mystery, they will be spiritually immature. Every idea on doctrine will dissuade them because they do not have the system of truth given to Paul.

Spiritual Education

As ministers of the Gospel, we must educate ourselves in the mysteries revealed to Paul so that we might be able to raise the saints in Christ and be educated to spiritual status. This education takes place within our belief system. It is what we are persuaded of and know to be true. Spiritual growth does not come as a result of certain religious practices we perform. It is even possible to practice praying, for example, yet be spiritually immature. It requires spiritual understanding for us to grow spiritually. So many who profess to be Christians, who claim to believe in the Lordship of Jesus Christ, are unstable and unestablished because they do not know what they believe and in whom they have believed. 

Jesus Christ did not preach the revelation of the mystery. The Twelve whom He ordained during His earthly ministry did not receive the revelation of the mystery. Paul did not get his message from the obscure teachings of Jesus during His earthly ministry. Believing this will only lead to confusion because chronologically, the four gospels were only written after the epistles. By implication, therefore, Paul did not have any of the four gospels to refer to. The four gospels were written for the sake of the epistles and not the other way round. 

The new creation man was never addressed pre-crucifixion. From Genesis to Malachi, in the four gospels and even in Acts of the Apostles, the new creation is not addressed, until God raised Saul of Tarsus and commissioned him with the apostleship to the gentiles. Until this took place, the gentiles did not have a message addressed to them. There are certain aspects of the death of Christ on the cross pertaining to how the economy of the Law was brought to an end that has nothing to do with us. Not everything Jesus did on the cross was necessarily for us; certain aspects of His death do not apply to us. It is, therefore, our responsibility as ministers of the gospel to redeem the original thought from the mind of God that Jesus came to reveal in order to redeem humanity.
